The Lab of Family and Kinship Studies, Department of Social Anthropology and History, Univerity of the Aegean invites you to the presentation of the art installation of Issam Kourbaj in collaboration with Ruth Padel under the title Dark Water, Burning World that will take place at the Museum-Library Stratis Eleftheriadis Tériade Friday 1st November at 19.00.
The Syrian-born, UK-based artist Issam Kourbaj, Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, and British poet and classicist Ruth Padel, Professor of Poetry at King’s College, have collaborated for the art installation Dark Water, Burning World that honours the courage of the refugees and the hospitality of the Greek islanders of Lesbos.
Padel and Kourbaj have collaborated on several editions of Dark Water, Burning World which has been performed and exhibited at: the Fitzwilliam Museumand King’s College Chapel, Cambridge; the British Museum, the Jameel Gallery, Victoria &Albert Museum and King’s College, London; Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, Suffolk; the PennMuseum, Philadelphia; the Brooklyn Museum, Columbia University and NYU, New York, the Venice Biennial 2019, and is in the permanent collection of the British Museum.
Ruth Padel will talk about this collaboration and read her poems.
Issam Kourbaj will display a small installation and present visuals relating to his work on the Syrian crisis.
Followed by discussion with the public.
