Symi: Pursuit of a speedboat with migrants by the Coast Guard - One foreigner dead

An incident between a Coast Guard vessel and a speedboat carrying migrants from Turkey to Symi, resulting in the fatal injury of a foreigner, occurred at 9 am on Friday morning.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the sea area northwest of Symi, when a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted the speedboat.

Its operators, of Turkish origin, did not comply with the signals of the Coast Guard, but proceeded to dangerous manoeuvres attempting to ram the vessel, putting the crew and the occupants of both boats in immediate danger.

The Coast Guard officers opened fire to immobilize the vessel. One of the bullets fatally wounded a passenger of Kuwaiti origin. According to K, the man who died was probably sitting near the engine.

He was taken to Rhodes General Hospital, where his death was confirmed, while the speedboat with the remaining 13 passengers was taken to the port of Symi. The prosecutor has been informed about the incident.
