Without extenuating circumstances the guilty for the "pogrom" in Sappho Square

With the proposal of the prosecutor and the decision of the Mytilene Trial Court at noon on Tuesday 9 July, most of the 26 accused for the alleged pogrom in Sappho Square in April 2018 were found guilty. In fact, the court did not recognise mitigating circumstances for the offences of disturbing the peace, dangerous bodily harm and racist motives.

It should be noted that for the first time in the courts of Mytilene, racist motives are recognized.

The end of the multi-day court case concerning the pogrom against refugees and migrants in April 2018 at Sapphous Square in Mytilene was marked at noon on Tuesday 9 July by the president of the Mytilene Trial Court announcing the verdict and sentences.
With 7 victims seeking vindication, 26 people were charged with a range of offences, with the case being heard six years later. It should be noted that the first of the 26 died in the meantime, so any prosecution was dropped. Five were acquitted of all charges, while 17 of the 26 were found guilty of disturbing the peace with a one-year jail sentence, all but one because of his young age.
No mitigating circumstances were granted on the prosecutor's recommendation.
The hard core of the defendants found guilty in the first instance are four persons for attempted dangerous bodily harm with racist characteristics. Two of them received sentences of 5 years and 9 months and the remaining two received sentences of six years.
