Living conditions in Moria camp have become unbearable over the past month as a dramatic increase in arrivals coincides with a deterioration in the weather and inadequate provision of food, shelter, healthcare and hygiene. Between the 1st and 26th of September 2017, 2,238 people risked their lives crossing the Mytilene Strait from Turkey to Lesvos, while during September 2016, 1068 people made this journey.

"Is it ever acceptable for children to be detained in dark and dirty police cells, without access to the most basic services? Of course not. But when it comes to unaccompanied migrant children, Greek authorities appear to think the answer is yes".

UNHCR report on the Greek Islands situation for July 2017.

The Fact Sheet ncludes information on new arrivals form Turkey and on the opperations coordinated by UNHCR and its partners in Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos, Leros, Rhodes and the other Islands of the Aegean sea.

Some 2,249 people arrived on the Aegean islands in July with the majority being Syrian and Iraqi. 60% of the new arrivals on the islands are women and children. Total population of concern on the Host Islands 8,551.
